GoldenAppleCorps Site - Search Engine Optimistation

June 27, 2008 – 10:30 am

GoldenAppleCorps LogoWe’ve been very busy behind the scenes over the last few days, tweaking this blog for all manner of things, many to do with Search Engine Optimisation.

The first obvious change that has nothing to do with SEO but just to make the site better is that the menu bar has been customised. The slideshow is probably the most obvious of these changes, but the order has been modified too. Pages now appear above posts, the first link has been added and you can also translate the whole site into fourteen different languages thanks to the global-translator plugin (link will open in a new window).

The rest of the changes are all to do with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and we’ve taken advice from someone who certainly knows what they’re doing, Courtney Tuttle from Court’s Internet Marketing School (opens in new window).

At the outset SEO can seem a touch daunting with people talking about Black Hat SEO, White Hat SEO, Google algorithims etc etc. So, what is it all about? In one sentance, SEO means getting your blog, website, etc as high up a seach engines’ ranking as possible. Given the number of sites that Google and the others can choose from, just how do you do it? Simple, give the engines an easy job of finding you in the first place and, second, make sure that when they do get to you, what you have on your pages is relevant to the search the visitor has made (that search being the one that your page is relevant for). White Hat SEO means doing it the right way, Black Hat is where you try and fool the engines - not, in my opinion anyway, a good plan.

The whole process is too much to go into today but rest assured that we will be coming back to it in a future post. We’ll also be going through the other plugins we’ve used on this site and why we’ve used them. In addition we’ll also be highlighting the various pages we have here.

So, after all that reasonably heavy going stuff, you might like to see some pictures. In that case we can only suggest that you either check out our own India Photographs Gallery or, if nature’s your thing, head over to Martin Parr’s Nature Pics and enjoy…
